Long Term Care

What’s it Like at Maplewood House and MSA Manor?

Maplewood House and MSA Manor are the homes that make up Maplewood Care Society. Maplewood House has 78 ensuite rooms, 76 of which are funded by Fraser Health. Shamrock Lane has 23 ensuite rooms in a secure neighbourhood. The other two neighbourhoods are Rosewood and Bluebell Lanes. MSA Manor has 34 ensuite rooms.

Everyone is encouraged to bring their own personal furniture and meaningful belongings to make them feel comfortable. Each room has a safe bed, a locking cupboard and private washroom with room for a wheelchair. Meals are served family-style with snacks and beverages offered throughout the day. There are areas for sitting, relaxing and socializing. People can do as much or as little as they want over the course of the day with activities offered to suit many interests and physical abilities. There are areas both inside and outdoors that are attractive, secure and accessible.

When people move in to a care home, their interests, experiences and stories come with them. Care and support is an important part of what we do. So is everything else in how people continue to have meaning, joy, humour, and sense of belonging. We aim to support everyone in making the most of their days, one unique person at a time.

How to Move Here

care-and-servicesIf you are a caregiver with a loved one who can no longer live safely or independently at home due to their complex health care needs such as progression of a chronic illness, disability or mental frailty, contact Fraser Health and ask for an assessment. The Abbotsford office number is 604-556-5000. A Case Manager will arrange to visit, and then make an assessment based on physical, mental and social factors. If your loved one is currently in hospital, the team there will assist you with the process.

Maplewood Care Society receives primary funding through the Fraser Health Authority and all admissions are arranged through Fraser Health. Preferred Care Home choice is accommodated whenever possible, but urgent admissions usually go to the first available bed in the region. If residents wish to move after admission, they may put their name on a transfer waitlist for another Care Home.

A Day at Maplewood House

I am an early riser. I like to have a cup of coffee and go outside to see what the weather is like every morning. I come back in and tell the other Residents what the weather is like because a lot of them can’t go outside by themselves. The sunrises remind me of growing up on the farm. My family had a big farm here in Abbotsford. We grew lots of fruits and vegetables. We didn’t have many animals but always a few dogs around. We planted flowers here last spring and I think we are going to try to plant some vegetables and maybe some strawberries this year. I am really looking forward to helping out.

Front-yardI love to socialize with the other Residents and staff. I help out where I can and assist the other Residents who can’t speak up or move around by themselves. I am a volunteer here and proud of it. They asked me to be the Santa for the Christmas party; it was a big surprise when some of the Residents saw me after. It was so much fun. Helping others gives me purpose, the food is really good here, but it is the people that make the place.

Maplewood is my home. If I can’t be on the farm I want to be here. I am very comfortable and safe. I love going on the outings. I really want to go to White Rock when it gets warmer. I want to see the water and of course the white rock.

A Day at MSA Manor

I am happy here. I hear people say they would never go to a care home but it works for me. I get all the help I need. My daughter and friends are close by and visit often. They come and join me as guests when we have special events.  We try new activities all the time.

My room is my home. It has all my memories displayed. I love my pictures; some are from England and some I have embroidered. I can tell you a story about each one of them. I like when the staff ask me about them.

I like doing good deeds for the other people living here who can’t help themselves as much as I can. I try to help them out or talk to others so they aren’t alone.

My favorite activities here are the ones that involve music. I love all music, it makes me so happy. The staff put on music in my room so I listen and watch the birds. I love my bird feeder outside the window. It attracts all sorts of different types of birds. I appreciate the staff for helping me. They even put bird seed in my feeder because they know the birds are so important to me.

Adult Day Program

What’s a Day Program?

An adult day program is a supportive therapeutic safe group environment for persons who are living at home. The goal of a day program is to help clients maintain and enhance optimal levels of social, physical and cognitive wellness. Clients usually come once or twice a week. This time provides respite support for care givers and families. A nominal fee is charged to support meal and special activity costs.

holding-lizardThe MSA Manor Adult Day Program is open Tuesday to Thursday. There are 13 spaces funded by Fraser Health. People who live in Abbotsford and surrounding communities are welcomed warmly as they get together for the day. Activities and themes are offered that are chosen by participants, such as reminiscing about personal and world events; bowling; bocce; creative arts; and music. A warm, nutritious lunch, as well as snacks and beverages, make up part of the day. Health support and monitoring is also an important part of having people come to the Day Program. A bathing service may also be included. Again, the main goal of the Program is for people to socialize and feel cared for and supported. Just as importantly, caregivers have much needed time while knowing their loved one is safe.

We aim to support everyone in the making the most of their days, one unique person at a time.
